Schlägl is a small village in Upper Austria best known for its Premonstratensian monastery, the Stift Schlägl, which has operated continuously since the 13th century. The 1920 Heller notes from this municipality belong to the broader Notgeld phenomenon that swept rural Austria following the collapse of the Habsburg economy — local administrations printing their own fractional emergency notes because small-denomination coinage had simply vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted down during and after the First World War.
Leopold Wöss signed as the authorizing official. At 25 Heller, this was the smallest practical unit of exchange for daily transactions in a village economy.
