Mitterbach an der Erlauf is a small resort municipality in Lower Austria, and this 25 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austria in 1920 as chronic coin shortages persisted well beyond the armistice. Hundreds of Austrian communes issued their own emergency pfennig-denomination scrip during this period, but the Mitterbach series is notable for involving Jos. Fluch as designer — a detail that elevates it above the purely functional municipal issues printed from generic templates.

Sommer of St. Pölten handled production, a regional printer responsible for several Lower Austrian Notgeld series of this vintage.
