Eferding, a small market town in Upper Austria, issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the postwar inflationary chaos that made official small-denomination coinage functionally worthless. The Stadtgemeinde series was authorized at the municipal level, a common but administratively fragmented response across Austria in 1920, with each issuing body responsible for its own redemption guarantees.
Langhammer of Linz handled production for numerous Upper Austrian municipal issues in this period, which occasionally creates attribution confusion between otherwise visually distinct series. Franz Vogl's signature as the authorizing official appears on this note in his capacity as a municipal representative.
