25 Heller Gries am Brenner

Gries am Brenner sits directly on the Brenner Pass route between Austria and Italy, and in 1920 that geography mattered enormously. The post-war collapse of the Austrian crown had left mountain communities without viable small change, prompting hundreds of Tyrolean municipalities to print their own Notgeld. Gries was among the smallest of these issuers — a village, essentially, operating a printing press out of practical necessity rather than civic vanity.
