Kroisbach was a small commune in the Steiermark region of Austria, and like hundreds of similar rural municipalities it resorted to printing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the coin shortage that followed the First World War. These small-denomination Heller notes filled the gap left by hoarded metal coinage, circulating purely on local trust rather than any formal banking guarantee. The 25 Heller denomination was among the most common issued across Austrian communes precisely because it matched the fractional transactions — bread, postage, tram fare — that metallic currency had previously handled.
