Issued to mark UNICEF's support for the International Year of the Child, declared by the United Nations for 1979. The Netherlands Antilles had a history of producing commemorative silver issues tied to UN initiatives, partly as a revenue mechanism — collector coins were a meaningful export for a small island federation with limited economic diversification.
Queen Juliana abdicated in April 1979, just months after this coin entered production, making it one of the last Netherlands Antilles issues struck under her name.
