The Danziger Zentralkasse Aktiengesellschaft was not a central bank in any orthodox sense — it functioned as a clearing and credit institution for the Free City of Danzig's cooperative banking sector. Its banknotes were issued during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1923, when Danzig's monetary status was itself contested: the Free City used the Danzig Mark, then scrambled to introduce the Gulden that same year to decouple from the collapsing German Reichsmark.
Notes from cooperative or quasi-banking institutions of this period were often short-lived emergency instruments, with many destroyed once the Gulden stabilized under League of Nations oversight.
