Christiaan Huygens appeared on Dutch paper currency at a moment when De Nederlandsche Bank was deliberately moving away from the allegorical and mythological imagery that had characterized earlier series. Doeve — better known as a political cartoonist and illustrator — brought an unusual background to banknote design, and his work on this series drew comment at the time for its restrained, almost severe character compared to contemporaries.
Enschedé had been producing Dutch banknotes from their Haarlem facility for generations by this point. The 25 Gulden remained in circulation until the series was withdrawn in 1960.
