De Curaçaosche Bank was established in 1828 as the central issuing authority for the Dutch West Indian territories, making it one of the oldest banking institutions in the Caribbean. By the 1930s, Curaçao's economy was being reshaped by the Shell oil refinery at Willemstad — the largest in the world at its peak — and the demand for higher-denomination notes reflected that industrial expansion rather than any particular monetary crisis.
Enschedé's involvement is unsurprising; the Haarlem firm had printed Netherlands colonial currency for generations and held a near-monopoly on Dutch overseas issues throughout the interwar period.
