The inscription records the formal withdrawal of this note type on 10 December 1879 and its replacement by notes of equal value, dated and signed at Willemstad, Curaçao, 16 December 1899 by the Administrator of Finance and Chairman of the Bank. |

The Bank van Curaçao was established in 1828, making it one of the earliest chartered banks in the Dutch Caribbean territories. This 25 Gulden note dates from a period when Curaçao's commercial economy was still largely driven by the entrepôt trade — the island functioned as a regional clearing hub, and paper instruments of this denomination would have moved between merchants rather than through everyday retail exchange.
Surviving examples from the 1855 series are extremely rare. The bank itself was dissolved in 1883, and no systematic preservation effort accompanied the closure.
