The Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank was founded in 1816 specifically to stabilize Austrian finances after the catastrophic Bancozettel inflation of the Napoleonic period — paper money had lost roughly 80% of its value by 1811, forcing a compulsory conversion at one-fifth face value. This 25 Gulden note belongs to the early redemptive phase of that recovery, when the bank was still working to rebuild public confidence in paper currency.
Danzinger was one of the bank's own in-house designers, which was unusual for the period — most central banks of this era contracted engraving firms. The watermark is the primary security measure, as intaglio printing technology for banknotes was not yet standard Austrian practice in the 1820s.
