| 正面描述 | Facing bust of Christopher Columbus occupying the central field, depicted wearing a period cap and draped garment rendered in high relief. The portrait is bold and stylized, set against a mirror-like proof field. A beaded border frames the design. The curved legend REPUBLIQUE D'HAITI arcs across the upper periphery, while the name CHRISTOPHE COLOMB appears along the lower border in spaced capital letters. |

Issued under the Duvalier regime during a period when Haiti's government was aggressively marketing commemorative coinage to foreign collectors — a hard currency strategy that had little to do with domestic circulation. These pieces were produced largely for export sale, and most never entered Haitian commerce at all.
The Columbus connection carries particular irony here: Hispaniola was the site of La Navidad, the first European settlement in the Americas, built from the wreckage of the Santa María in 1492 and destroyed by the time Columbus returned the following year.
