| Reverse description | Central device depicts a finely engraved gazelle head facing forward, emerging from a bed of stylized vegetation including millet stalks and maize ears, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail. Flanking the central motif on either side are symmetrical sprays of grain and corn, evoking the agricultural wealth of the region. A decorative beaded garland frames the upper portion of the field, while the engraver's signature 'G.B.L.BAZOR' appears incuse at the lower left of the central device. The date '1957' is inscribed in the lower exergue, flanked by small floral ornaments. |

The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo had an exceptionally short operational life — it was created in 1955 and dissolved following independence movements that swept the region within five years. Togo itself became a UN trust territory administered by France after World War II, and this issue reflects that unusual liminal status: neither fully colonial nor independent. The 1957 date places it just three years before Togolese independence in 1960.
