The Institut d'Émission de l'Afrique Occidentale Française et du Togo had an exceptionally short operational life — it was created in 1955 and dissolved following independence movements that swept the region within five years. Togo itself became a UN trust territory administered by France after World War II, and this issue reflects that unusual liminal status: neither fully colonial nor independent. The 1957 date places it just three years before Togolese independence in 1960.
