Additional information

Rwanda's first gold coinage was issued just four years after independence, commissioned by Kayibanda's government through the Belgian firm Compagnie Belge d'Assurance Crédit as part of a broader effort to establish monetary credibility for the newly sovereign franc. Kayibanda himself would be deposed — and later starved to death under house arrest — in the 1973 military coup led by Juvénal Habyarimana.

Mintage was extremely low, struck for prestige and diplomatic gift purposes rather than circulation.
