Belgium's 1848 coinage was struck against the backdrop of revolutionary upheaval across Europe, yet Leopold I's government managed to project unusual stability — partly by design. The 25-franc gold piece was issued in limited quantities compared to the more workhorse 20-franc denominations, placing it in an awkward commercial position that limited its practical circulation almost from the start.
The lettered edge variety is documented under Delmonte G#1261, distinct from the plain-edge strikings of the same type. Survivors in any condition above heavily circulated are scarce.
