Guinea's 1959 coinage was among the first acts of an independent state that had done something no other French African territory dared that year — voted "Non" in de Gaulle's September 1958 referendum on the French Community. France responded by withdrawing all personnel and aid within two months, dismantling equipment, and taking administrative records. The Banque de la République de Guinée was established almost immediately, and this issue followed as one of the first physical expressions of that break.
The franc guinéen replaced the CFA franc at par on 1 March 1960, though these coins were struck in anticipation of that transition.
