Burundi gained independence from Belgian trusteeship in 1962 as a kingdom under Mwami Mwambutsa IV, but a series of coups in quick succession — first deposing Mwambutsa in favor of his son Ntare V in July 1966, then Ntare himself in November of the same year — cleared the way for Micombero's republic. This coin marks the first anniversary of that November 1966 coup-as-republic, making it a commemorative issued by the very government whose existence it celebrates.
The series was struck at the Brussels mint, a facility Burundi relied on for prestige gold issues throughout the early independence period.
