Reverse description The reverse displays a finely detailed botanical composition depicting a cluster of millet or rice plants (Pennisetum glaucum), rendered with naturalistic precision, with heavily laden grain heads drooping gracefully from tall stalks that rise from a dense base. The engraving, signed 'COPPIN' at the left field, showcases intricate relief work capturing individual seed heads and narrow leaves. The same characteristic zigzag sawtooth decorative border as seen on the obverse encircles the design along the inner rim. The plain field provides an uncluttered background that accentuates the agricultural motif, reflecting Mali's agrarian economy. No inscriptions or legends appear on this face.

Additional information

Mali's 1976 aluminum coinage was struck during a period of acute monetary strain following the country's short-lived experiment with its own currency after breaking from the West African franc zone in 1962. The Malian franc collapsed badly enough that Mali was readmitted to the CFA franc zone in 1984, making the entire independent coinage series — including this piece — effectively obsolete within a decade of issue.
