Obverse description Left-facing bare-headed bust of Marianne, the allegorical personification of the French Republic, rendered in a classical neoclassical style by engraver G.B.L. Bazor, whose signature appears on the truncation. Her hair is elaborately styled with ornate curls and a decorative sunburst motif at the crown. The date is divided on either side of the effigy, with '19' to the left and '56' to the right of the field. The curved legend 'REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' arcs around the lower periphery of the coin.
