| Opmerkingen |
The Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale found itself in an awkward position after the fall of France in 1940. With metropolitan France under German occupation and normal supply lines to French printers severed, the bank turned to American sources. E. A. Wright in Philadelphia — better known for engraved stationery and securities than for currency work — produced several emergency issues for French West African territories during this period, this being among them.
The political situation complicated matters further: French West Africa remained under Vichy authority until late 1942, meaning these notes, printed in the United States, circulated under a colonial administration nominally aligned with Germany.
