The Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale operated under French colonial authority across West Africa, and by 1942 its note production had been pulled back to metropolitan France — a logistical reality of the war years, when the Banque de France absorbed printing work that might otherwise have been contracted abroad. This particular issue falls squarely in the Vichy period, though the BAO's notes carried no overt political markings distinguishing them from pre-war issues.

Deloche and Hourriez were both established intaglio craftsmen within the Banque de France's own atelier, which gives this note a tighter institutional pedigree than many colonial issues of the period. Sébastien Laurent's design credit is relatively rare in documented BAO issues.
