The Arabic legend of the country name arcs around the upper and right periphery of the field, while the Latin legend PEOPLE'S DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF YEMEN curves along the lower periphery. The design is contained within a plain raised rim.

Beschrijving keerzijde A traditional Arabian dhow depicted in profile occupying the centre of the field, its large lateen sail billowing to the right, a smaller secondary hull visible below the main vessel, conveying a sense of maritime heritage. The denomination 25 FILS appears to the left in Latin numerals and script, while the Arabic equivalent فلسا ٢٥ curves to the upper right. The four-digit Gregorian date 1982 is inscribed in the exergue along the lower periphery, separated from the design by the vessel's hull.

Aanvullende informatie

The People's Democratic Republic of Yemen — South Yemen — was the Arab world's only Marxist-Leninist state, established after British withdrawal from Aden in 1967. This series, introduced under the ruling Yemeni Socialist Party, replaced the transitional South Arabian coinage as the government worked to sever symbolic ties with the British colonial monetary system. The PDRY maintained close economic ties with the Soviet Union and Cuba throughout this period, though Soviet aid never fully stabilized the country's chronic currency shortages.

The republic ceased to exist in 1990 upon unification with the Yemen Arab Republic to the north.
