The South Arabian Currency Authority existed for barely a decade, created by the British to manage coinage for the Federation of South Arabia — a short-lived political construction that collapsed entirely when Britain withdrew from Aden in 1967. This 1964 issue was among the first coins struck for the federation, produced at the Royal Mint. Within three years of minting, the issuing authority, the federation itself, and British presence in the region had all ceased to exist, replaced by the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen.
