The neoclassical facade displays its characteristic pipe organ and ornamental figures between the columns. Arcing along the upper periphery is the legend REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH in stylized lettering. Austria's Philharmonic series launched in 1989 as the country's first gold bullion coin, introduced partly in response to the commercial dominance of the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in the European market. The 25 Euro quarter-ounce denomination was added in 1994 to round out the weight range. At .9999 fineness, it was among the earliest sovereign bullion issues to achieve that four-nines purity standard, which the Austrian Mint has maintained without interruption.
The coin is legal tender denominated in euros following Austria's 2002 currency conversion, though its face value bears no meaningful relationship to metal content.
