Reverse description The reverse, designed by John M. Mercanti, depicts an allegorical figure of Lady Liberty in dynamic high relief, her arms outstretched and her gown billowing as she strides forward with evident movement and energy. She wears a radiate crown and her long hair streams freely in the wind. Behind her, the stripes and stars of the American flag fill the field, rendered with fine line engraving to convey the textile texture of the cloth. A boldly sculpted bald eagle with wings fully spread dominates the upper portion of the design, positioned as though descending in flight above Liberty's head. The border is punctuated by a ring of alternating large and small five-pointed stars set into a textured ground, forming a bold decorative frame that unifies the composition.
