The falkuša is a double-ended fishing vessel specific to the waters around the island of Komiža on Vis, used primarily for bluefin tuna and sardine fishing. Its symmetrical hull allowed fishermen to reverse direction without turning — practical in the narrow channels between Vis and its satellite islets. The Croatian National Bank has issued a series of numismatic pieces honoring endangered or extinct traditional Adriatic craft, and the gajeta falkuša sits near the top of that list: fewer than a handful of seaworthy examples survive, with the last working boats retired by the mid-twentieth century.
