Obverse description A finely detailed depiction of a dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) clinging to a leafy branch occupies the recessed central field, rendered with naturalistic fur texture and precise botanical detail. The animal is shown in a three-quarter upward pose, gripping the branch with its forepaws amid foliage. The Irish-language legend ÉIRE appears incuse along the upper border of the raised rim, and the date 1997 is incuse along the lower border, both in an elegant serif typeface consistent with Irish coinage tradition.

Reverse description The traditional Irish Brian Boru harp, the national symbol of Ireland, is depicted in high relief at the centre of the recessed field, with finely engraved strings and ornate forepillar detailing. The denomination legend 25 EURO appears in bold incuse lettering below the harp along the lower border. Twelve five-pointed stars are evenly spaced around the raised outer rim, referencing the European Union's circle of stars motif.
