Beschrijving keerzijde A left-facing portrait bust of Catalan architect and illumination engineer Carles Buïgas dominates the center of the field, rendered in fine relief. Behind the effigy, a depiction of the Magic Fountain of Montjuïc and the Palau Nacional of Barcelona are visible as architectural references to his legacy. The legend CARLES BUÏGAS arcs along the upper field, with the commemorative centennial dates 1898 - 1998 inscribed below the portrait. The engraver's signature J. JIMENEZ appears in the lower field.

Aanvullende informatie

Carles Buïgas designed the illuminated fountains of Montjuïc for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, a commission he won at age 26 after submitting plans so ambitious the city initially doubted they could be executed. The fountains opened on the exposition's inaugural night — 3,000 jets, coordinated color lighting, and a central geyser reaching 50 meters — and remain operational today largely on his original hydraulic engineering.

This coin was issued the year after Spain joined the Eurozone convergence process, one of the last silver commemorative series struck under the peseta before decimal coinage was retired in 2002.
