| Reverse description | A bold, slightly left-facing draped bust of the Portuguese historian and poet Alexandre Herculano dominates the central field, rendered in fine sculptural relief with careful attention to his bearded physiognomy and period attire. The dates 1877 and 1977, flanking the portrait on either side at mid-field, commemorate the centenary of his death. The circular legend CENTENARIO·DA·MORTE·DE·ALEXANDRE·HERCULANO arcs around the upper and lateral periphery, while a single five-pointed star punctuates the lower border. The engraver's signature M.NORTE SCULP. appears to the right of the bust, with the mint mark and year incused at lower left. |
