Sobhuza II's Diamond Jubilee in 1981 marked sixty years on the Swazi throne — a reign that began in 1921 and would continue until his death in 1982, making him the longest-reigning monarch in recorded history at the time. He had navigated Swaziland from British protectorate status through independence in 1968 while consolidating near-absolute royal authority, culminating in his 1973 decree suspending the constitution and banning political parties.
The issue was struck in the same 28.28g sterling format used across Commonwealth commemorative coinage of the period, a specification inherited from the Royal Mint's standardized proof program.
