The ECU — European Currency Unit — was never legal tender in the UK, making Britain's official ECU-denominated issues something of a political curiosity. The Three Graces design referenced the original 1817 pattern by William Wyon, a piece so celebrated it had never entered circulation. Issuing a plated base-metal version in 1992 placed it squarely in the souvenir and collector market, timed to coincide with the Maastricht Treaty debate — a moment when British participation in European monetary union was anything but settled.
The plated composition distinguishes this from the silver strikes of the same type issued concurrently by the Royal Mint.
