正面描述	The obverse features a central composition dominated by a stylized compass rose or navigational wheel radiating outward across the field, upon which rests a Manueline tower or architectural element at center and a Portuguese caravel under full sail to the right, its sails bearing the Cross of the Order of Christ. To the lower left, the Portuguese royal shield of arms is depicted in detail, surrounded by a ring of twelve five-pointed stars evocative of the European Community emblem. The legend PORTUGAL arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1997 and denomination 25 ECU inscribed in the lower field.

This coin honors Fernão de Magalhães, whose circumnavigation expedition of 1519–1522 was completed under Sebastián Elcano after Magellan's death in the Philippines in April 1521 — he never finished the voyage he commanded. The X# prefix in Krause indicates a non-circulating issue outside the standard national series, which these ECU pieces technically were.
