| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a detailed bust of the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias facing three-quarters to the right, depicted in period dress with a ship's wheel partially visible in the lower foreground. In the background, a caravel navigates stylized waves against a rocky coastal backdrop rendered in high relief. The curved legend EUROPA E OS NOVOS MUNDOS arcs along the upper rim, with the mint initials INCM incorporated at the upper right. The explorer's name BARTOLOMEU DIAS appears in a curved legend along the lower rim, all on a mirror-polished proof field. |

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Dias's rounding of the Cape of Good Hope — achieved in 1488, though he named it the Cape of Storms; it was João II who renamed it, apparently convinced the route to India was now viable. Portugal's ECU-denominated commemoratives of this period were struck explicitly for the collector market and had no circulation status within any monetary union, a somewhat ironic detail given that Portugal joined the EEC in 1986 and was actively working toward full economic integration at the time of issue.
