Armenia's first silver commemorative series launched in 1994, the same year the country was still navigating the ceasefire that halted — but did not resolve — the Nagorno-Karabakh war. David of Sasun is the central hero of Armenia's national epic, an oral poem likely composed between the 8th and 10th centuries and only transcribed in the 19th, making his appearance on this early post-Soviet issue a deliberate act of cultural reclamation after decades of Soviet-managed Armenian identity.
The epic itself was not fully standardized until Soviet ethnographers compiled regional variants in the 1930s.
