The National Bank of Greece turned to the American Bank Note Company for this series at a time when no Greek printer could meet the security standards required for a national issue. ABNC dominated the era's export banknote market, and their New York-engraved plates produced work that was essentially impossible to counterfeit locally — a genuine concern in a country where the monetary system was still consolidating after independence.
The 1861–1863 date range reflects successive issue dates within the same authorised series, not a redesign. Notes from the earlier end of that window are meaningfully scarcer.
