Singapore's Lunar New Year bullion series has been issued continuously since 1981, making it one of the longest-running programs of its kind in Southeast Asia. The 2006 Dog issue falls in the middle of the second full cycle through the twelve-year calendar, a cycle the Mint completed without interruption despite significant regional economic turbulence in the preceding decade.

At five troy ounces of fine silver, these were struck primarily for the collector and gift market tied to the Lunar New Year gifting tradition — not for general circulation.
