Jamaica issued this piece as part of the broader wave of UNICEF commemoratives produced by mints worldwide around the organization's 55th anniversary in 2001. The series was largely a licensing arrangement — national central banks authorized issues that were sold primarily to collector markets abroad, with a portion of proceeds directed toward UNICEF programs. Actual circulation was never the intent.
