Issued three years before the calendar rollover itself, this commemorative was part of a wave of "millennium" gold issues that flooded the numismatic market throughout the mid-to-late 1990s. The Bahamas was among the earlier entrants, producing this piece while the Y2K anxiety that would later dominate the public imagination was still largely confined to computer engineers.
Struck to one troy ounce at .999 fineness, it trades almost entirely on its bullion content in practice.
