Sealand — a former Royal Navy sea fort seven miles off the Suffolk coast — declared independence in 1967 under Paddy Roy Bates and has issued commemorative coinage ever since, despite recognition by no sovereign state. Princess Joan, Roy Bates's wife, died in 2016 after decades as the self-styled head of the royal household. This piece was struck that same year as a mourning issue, a practice more commonly associated with established monarchies than a rusting wartime platform occupied by a handful of people in the North Sea.
