This miniature gold issue belongs to Liberia's early 2000s wave of thematic collector coins — a program that leaned heavily on Western historical figures with no particular connection to the country. Luther's inclusion here is purely commercial. The coins were produced for the international collector market, not domestic circulation, and Liberia's name on the obverse reflects little more than a licensing arrangement with a private minting operation.
