Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia is depicted centrally, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a dove in flight, surmounted by a scroll inscribed with the national motto. The date 2002 is split across the lower field, flanking the arms to left and right. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA runs along the upper periphery, while a second legend THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE appears on the motto scroll within the arms. A secondary inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA is engraved along the lower rim, all within a beaded border.

One of dozens of small-format gold issues Liberia produced in the early 2000s under licensing arrangements with foreign distributors, primarily targeting the collector gift market in Europe and North America. The coins were legal tender in name only — Liberia had no meaningful gold coinage tradition and no domestic market for them.
