Hutt River — the self-declared micronation carved out of a Western Australian wheat farm by Leonard Casley in 1970 after a dispute with the government over wheat production quotas — issued a series of coins commemorating Cold War weapons systems in the early 1990s. The AIM-9 Sidewinder, developed by the U.S. Naval Weapons Center at China Lake beginning in the late 1940s, became the West's most widely deployed short-range air-to-air missile and saw combat as early as 1958 over the Taiwan Strait.
Hutt River's numismatic output was largely aimed at the collector market, with legal tender status existing only within its own contested jurisdiction.
