Additional information

Hutt River Province was a self-declared micronation in Western Australia, established in 1970 when wheat farmer Leonard Casley seceded from Australia in a dispute over wheat production quotas. By 1991, Casley — styling himself Prince Leonard I — had been issuing commemorative coinage for years, marketed largely to collectors rather than circulated as functional currency. This piece marks his return from one of his periodic overseas trips during which he lobbied foreign governments for diplomatic recognition, a campaign that met with almost no success.

No nation ever formally recognized Hutt River. The coins are legal curiosities as much as numismatic ones.
