Issued to mark the 25th anniversary of the Brunei Currency Board, established in 1967 when Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia entered a currency interchangeability agreement that kept their dollars at parity. That arrangement had already fractured — Singapore withdrew in 1973, Malaysia in 1974 — leaving Brunei in a peculiar bilateral arrangement with Singapore alone, one that remains technically in force to this day.
