Reverse description The reverse presents a right-facing bust portrait of Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer, rendered in fine relief. He is depicted bearded and wearing a broad-brimmed period hat. To the left of his portrait, a small sailing ship of the Age of Discovery era is shown in the field. The legend 'FERDINAND MAGELLAN' arcs along the upper rim, and the denomination '25 DOLLARS' is inscribed in the lower exergue. The overall composition is framed by a fine milled border.

Additional information

Liberia's prolific early-2000s gold miniature program flooded the market with sub-gram issues tied to explorers, historical figures, and anniversaries — most struck by European private mints on contract rather than by any Liberian state facility. Collector demand was the sole reason for their existence; none entered circulation.

Magellan himself never completed the circumnavigation bearing his name, having been killed in the Philippines in April 1521 at the Battle of Mactan.
