Keatinge & Ball were Confederate government printers during the Civil War, responsible for a substantial portion of the South's wartime currency production. That a Montana fraternal lodge was still commissioning work from them decades later — for fair scrip, no less — says something about the firm's postwar survival and continued reach into niche commercial printing markets well outside their wartime notoriety.
Fair scrip of this denomination is unusual. Twenty-five dollars was a serious sum for a lodge fundraiser, suggesting either bulk purchasing arrangements with vendors or a system designed to minimize change-making at busy event booths. Lewistown Lodge No. 456 received its charter in 1902.
