The British Virgin Islands issued a series of wildlife-themed silver pieces in the early 1990s under license arrangements common to many Caribbean territories lacking a domestic minting infrastructure — the polar bear subject having no geographic connection to the islands whatsoever. These were produced squarely for the collector and bullion-adjacent market, never intended for circulation. The Royal Canadian Mint struck polar bear coinage in the same period, which likely influenced the proliferation of the motif across foreign-licensed issues chasing the same buyers.
