| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central depiction of the Magna Mater Austriae (Our Lady of Mariazell), shown enthroned and richly vested beneath a radiant sunburst halo, set within an arched niche. The figure is rendered in high relief with elaborate ornamental detail on the vestments. Six inset crystals in the red and white colours of the Austrian flag are arranged symmetrically in the lower corners of the field — three on each side. The papal tiara and crossed keys symbol of the Holy See appears to the lower left of the legend. The curved inscription BENEDICT XVI IN MARIAZELL 2007 arcs along the upper border of the oval top. |

Pope Benedict XVI visited Mariazell, Austria in September 2007 — his first papal pilgrimage to what is considered the most important Marian shrine in Central Europe. The visit drew roughly 70,000 pilgrims. Cook Islands issued this piece under its standard numismatic licensing arrangement, which has produced hundreds of commemorative gold coins with no circulation function whatsoever.
The five-nines gold purity is the meaningful technical distinction here. Most bullion and commemorative gold runs to .9999; achieving .99999 requires an additional refining pass and was used by only a handful of mints at the time.
