Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara's government commissioned this issue to commemorate Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau, the paramount chief who unified much of Fiji under his rule before ceding the islands to Britain in 1874. Cakobau's decision to deed sovereignty to Queen Victoria was driven partly by an American debt claim — the U.S. consul had held him personally liable for property destroyed by American citizens, a dispute that dragged on for over a decade and destabilized his rule.
Fiji had gained independence just four years before this coin was struck, in October 1970.
